The Greasy Dozen Build
The rear rim got the same treatment as the front and is laced to an OEM star hub that also got some fresh internals
Just some quick mockup pics from tonight
Im not sure if Im going to run the 39mm front end or not my original idea was to take an early knucklehead springer that I have and narrow it by about 3" but Im also liking the 39mm front end so Im still very up in the air about it
if I keep the 39mm legs they will go in either a set of Mullins Chain Drive Super Narrow Trees or a set of Wargasser narrow trees
Starting the build for The Greasy Dozen Contest
Just getting around to starting this build in between waiting on parts for some of my customers projects to come in so I just finished building the wheels and pulled the frame down off the shelf and threw on a 39mm front end that I had kicking around
Basic plans for the bike are
-single loop frame from Mullins Chain Drive (stock panhead specs)
-Original Akront aluminum rims with buchanans stainless spokes laced to a Wargasser hex hub in the front and an OEM star hub in the rear
-1956 Panhead FLH motor
-4spd ratchet trans kick only
-open 1.5" belt primary
-custom handlebars made by me
-custom exhaust and custom mid controls and a bunch of other well umm custom stuff made right here in the USA in my shop
the deadline for this contest is June 30 so it will be a little tough on me trying to get this done in between finishing up my customers builds and projects etc.
for more info on The Greasy Dozen sponsored by Old Bike Barn check out their website for it at http://thegreasydozen.com/
This is what the donor bike for this project looked like ( I bought it for just the motor and trans and the rims )
Here is the frame that Brandon from Mullins Chain Drive Made for me frame #015 these are very similar to the old Motorshop frames from before my time. Brandon does an awesome job with these
Some pics of the rebuilding and refinishing of the original Akront wheels
After a little time in the blasting cabinet I sanded them with some WD40 and 400 grit paper then again with some WD40 and scotchbrite to keep the brushed finish
Wargasser Narrow Hex Hub (very similar to the Old AEE Hex Hub)
Like all my wheels that I build these are built with Buchanans Stainless Spokes and Nipples
On the truing stand
The great thing about these wheels is that they were so well made they keep a very tight runout tolerance even after being used for god knows how many years

New Custom Made Motorcyle Wheel Truing Stand
So I got this cheapo wheel truing stand from a very good friend of mine for free
he bought it on ebay and it was awful it wouldnt line up straight no matter what and wobbled all over the place
the side legs were made of cheap thin material that flexed as the wheel spun on it making it impossible to get anything trued up on it
so I needed to lace up and true a nice Hex Hub Spool to an original Akront 21" hoop with some nice Buchanans stainless spokes and instead of running it over to my friends shop I figured it was a good time to re work that truing stand so I can take care of this in my own shop
this is what I started with
I had to shave down the bearing cones so that actually fit the wheel bearings properly so I tossed them into the lathe
then I got to work on making the threaded rods for the bearing cones to slide over and secure into place
I used some 3/4" threaded rod and turned them down to match the ends on the stock rods (which were metric thread)
the original is on the left and the one I made is on the right
took some 2"x2" square tube that I wanted to use as the new legs so they would be nice and sturdy and cut them to length then drilled them out on the mill for holes for the new rods to pass through
new legs up into place and a mock up alignment rod in place to hold everything true
I added some bracing on the bottom to keep it all nice and stiff and not flex
then added in some braces so the legs would stay firmly in place
welded up the nuts and washers to the legs to have a piece to thread the bearing cone shafts into and be nice and sturdy
and shes all done nice and sturdy
I trued up the new wheel with it just fine and I was very pleased with how well it works
it works as good as some of the $600 truing stands Ive used before

Evo Sporty Project is all wrapped up
Okay bike is all done on my end
customer will be picking this up shortly
we went with a +2 repro springer on the bike and I think it really sets the look of the bike off well
it keeps a nice traditional style look to it nothing to flashy etc. but with a modern drivetrain
Mike at 47 Industries did a great job on the tank and Im very pleased with how everything else on the bike came out
(just a side note not everything is all lined up and tightend down in the pics I have to make a final assembly with all the proper hardware for the bike)
so on to the pics
some custom spacers and axle setup to run a 3/4" wheel with the early Harley Springer and Rockers
these are made of 304 stainless
